Dental sealants are a super important part of any child’s oral hygiene plan. They’re simple to apply during early visits to a pediatric dentist and can provide long lasting protection that can save your child from getting cavities on the top grooves of their teeth.

Sealants are painted onto the chewing surfaces of molars during a routine pediatric dental appointment. It’s simple, painless, and relatively quick.

Sealants work! We recommend them as part of a comprehensive prevention program because they provide valuable protection against cavities and sensitivity, and overall wear and tear on teeth.

Dental sealants do not protect against impact trauma caused by falls or collisions. We include this to create realistic expectations about what sealants can and cannot do, and to point out that sealants may not protect all sorts of oral emergencies.

Signs of a dental abscess include:

  • Pain when chewing
  • Red or swollen gums
  • Swollen neck, jaw, or cheeks
  • Fever
  • Bitter taste in the mouth or frequent bad breath

Dental Sealants Are Long-Lasting Protection

The amazing thing about sealants is that they have the capability of lasting well into adulthood!  An investment in sealants is a great way to make sure that your child starts their smile off right!  Sealants cost about 20% (one fifth) the cost of a filling.

We recommend that you stay away from sticky, gummy foods because those foods dislodge and break sealants.  The condition of your child’s dental sealants is something we check at each cleaning and checkup. If we notice that your child’s sealants are not sound we will repair them, sometimes at no charge to you!

We stand behind the history of sealants and we know that they work when properly cared for. Ask our fantastic staff about more information about sealants.
